Photo Voice: Stanley Kubrick

Είναι οφθαλμοφανές με μια ματιά στις εικόνες της σειράς, «Chicago City of Contrasts», πως αν δεν ήταν ο Stanley Kubrick που γνωρίζουμε, θα μπορούσε να είχε εξελιχθεί σε έναν από τους σπουδαιότερους φωτογράφους του εικοστού αιώνα.

Το περιοδικό «Look» τον έστειλε στο Σικάγο το 1949, τέσσερα χρόνια πριν γυρίσει το πρώτο του φιλμ, πολύ προτού ξεκινήσει να μεταμορφώνει το σινεμά με τις ταινίες - ορόσημο που σκηνοθέτησε από το «Paths of Glory» και έπειτα. Η συνεργασία του με το έντυπο ξεκίνησε το 1946, αρχικά σαν μαθητευόμενος, κατόπιν ως φωτοδημοσιογράφος πλήρους απασχόλησης. Το διάστημα εκείνο, ο Kubrick συμπλήρωνε τα εισοδήματά του παίζοντας στοιχηματικό σκάκι στο Washington Square Park και διάφορες λέσχες ζατρικίου του Μανχάταν.

Η σχέση του με το σκάκι είναι δηλωτική του τρόπου που προσέγγιζε τις τέχνες, καθώς του εμφύσησε «υπομονή και πειθαρχία, τη σημασία της επιλογής ανάμεσα σε διαφορετικές εναλλακτικές τη στιγμή που μια ενστικτώδης απόφαση φαντάζει ελκυστική». Ποιο συνδυασμό κινήσεων διάλεξε για να απεικονίσει το Σικάγο; Όπως υποδηλώνει ο τίτλος, το είδε σαν μια «πόλη των αντιθέσεων». Εργάτες, μποξέρ, χρηματιστές, φυλετικά καταπιεσμένοι, νικητές και χαμένοι της ζωής, πρωταγωνιστές και περιθωριακοί, και κυρίως, άφθονες νυχτερινές λήψεις. Η σειρά, τραβηγμένη σε φιλμ Kodak XX Large, αποπνέει δράμα, ένταση, υποβλητική προοπτική.

Οι εκδόσεις Phaidon κυκλοφόρησαν μια ανθολογία εικόνων του το 2005, («Drama and Shadows»), ενώ το μουσείο Royaux des Beaux Arts των Βρυξελλών, παρουσιάζει αυτές τις ημέρες τον φωτογράφο Kubrick, σε μια έκθεση που διαρκεί ως την 1η Ιουλίου.
